Appendix B — Legacy magrittr Operators

C Legacy magrittr Operators

This book teaches the base R pipe |> exclusively (see @r-pipe-magrittr for the one comparison table). This appendix is a graveyard: a read-only map for the magrittr operators you will meet in inherited code. Do not use them in new code.

Inherited operator Meaning Modern equivalent (this book)
x %>% f() Forward x into first argument of f x \|> f()
x %$% f(col) Expose columns of x to f x \|> pull(col) \|> f()
x %<>% f() Forward and assign back to x x <- x \|> f()
x %>% extract(i) / extract2(i) Subset by position or name x[i] / x[[i]], or pull(x, col) / pluck(x, i)
x %>% use_series(col) Extract col as vector pull(x, col) or x$col

The pipe chapter’s data-extraction section covers pull()/pluck() with runnable examples; the legacy note there explains why %$%, %<>%, extract()/extract2() and use_series() stay out of the main text.
